Taking Our Picture, Please

The scene and words are all too familiar for anyone who has traveled in the developing world -- 'take our picture, please miss,' as they gather round, eyes imploring you to focus the lens on them. We were visiting a school outside of Addis Ababa and the boys and girls had come outside to see our entourage leave in their big, comfortable white vans to speed off to the next event.

Such a hot day, but they were in their bright red, wool "jumpers" and properly scrubbed for the foreign aid audience. They were smiling and happy to have a chance to giggle and pose in front of my lens. One boy took on the role of "traffic cop," holding the others back who were rushing at me. And then we were off with only this memory to remind me of that visit on that hot February day.
